Priority 5 from the Seniors' Health (Alberta, Canada) PSP

UNCERTAINTY: What are the optimal ways to ensure healthcare providers take into consideration the goals and wishes of the older adult during care/treatment? (JLA PSP Priority 5)
Overall ranking 5
JLA question ID 0083/5
Explanatory note

Older people are still often only partially listened to when decisions about their health are made. People wanted to know how their goals and wishes might be better communicated and taken into account when treatments were planned

Extra information provided by this PSP
Original uncertainty examples Seniors often lose choice in the system ~ not enough involving the client in decisions ~ That the elder persons wishes are respected no matter what state their disease process is at ~ Health care still remains fairly paternalistic. I would love to see the patient & family centered care truly come to fruition. I would like to see conversations around what the person's goals are (not just goals of care) happen early and remain open-going.
